Service Description

Take your ceramic skills to the next level in this 5-week intermediate hand-building course for adults 15+. This class is designed for those with previous experience in hand-building or wheel-throwing who are ready to move beyond basic forms. Under the guidance of our instructor, Vanessa, you will focus on constructing large vases and decorative bowls using the coiling method. To ensure high quality finishing, we dedicate two full sessions to each piece using up to 8-10lbs of clay. This pace allows you to master advanced coiling techniques, manage the weight of larger clay bodies to prevent warping, and spend focused time on intricate surface decorations and detailing. The course includes dedicated time for free-building, giving you the opportunity to apply these advanced coiling techniques to your own creative concepts. You will gain a deeper understanding of multi-stage assembly, reinforcement, and professional glazing for larger forms. Preparing for class: - Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty - Closed toe shoes recommended - Trim down nails as having long nails do interfere with the process and can make the process difficult - Bring your own apron - Class fees cover everything from instruction to clay, glaze, firing, and use of studio tools Week 1: Learn the coil building technique and start your first piece. Projects will be wrapped to keep the clay workable. Week 2: Finish your first coil piece. Learn how to add handles or decorative details before submitting it for firing. Week 3: Begin building your second piece, which will be kept damp and workable for the following session. Week 4: Finalize the construction of your second piece and apply any desired decorations. Week 5: Watch a glazing demonstration and apply glazes to both finished pieces for the final firing. We highly encourage students to attend all scheduled classes, as make-up sessions do not offer the same level of guidance as regular sessions.
