Start your ceramic journey with this 2-week beginner sgraffito hand-building course for adults 15+. This class is designed for anyone regardless of previous experience who is ready to explore the art of clay! Under the guidance of our instructor, Vanessa, you will focus on constructing functional mugs using the slab method. To ensure a high quality finish, we dedicate the first session to building your forms. This pace allows you to master clean joins, manage clay moisture to prevent cracks, and spend focused time on sturdy handle attachment. The course includes dedicated time for sgraffito, giving you the opportunity to apply this carving technique to your own creative designs. You will gain a deeper understanding of applying colored slips, carving through surfaces, and professional glazing for your handmade mugs. Preparing for class: - Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty - Closed toe shoes recommended - Trim down nails as having long nails do interfere with the process and can make the process difficult - Bring your own apron - Class fees cover everything from instruction to clay, glaze, firing, and use of studio tools Week 1: Build two basic slab mugs using a template. Week 2: Learn sgraffito technique and decorate mugs made in the previous week. NOTE: Mugs will be clear glazed by our studio techs. We want every student to receive proper, uninterrupted instruction. We ask that students arrive on-time or 5-10 minutes before class. To avoid disruption, we cannot accommodate students who are more than 15 minutes late. We highly encourage students to attend all scheduled classes, as make-up sessions do not offer the same level of guidance as regular sessions.
